The Straight Dope
This isn't carried in my local papers (and I hardly read the newspaper these days anyway), so the online way is the way to go! I especially like the UBB discussion forums here -- the most active I've seen anywhere!

Robot Toys Shrouded in Mystery
My buddy Andy Hooper gives the lowdown on tin robot collecting: "Perhaps all tin robots, like ward heelers and ugly buildings, ultimately develop respectability with the passage of time."

Dan Savage's new book is excerpted in the Stranger; he and his partner have adopted a baby. "He lulls me into the car with false promises of books on tape, or conversation. Then, when we're too far from home to turn back, and we're going too fast for me to jump, he puts on a CD he knows I'm going to object to -- chunk-ka tcha, chunk-ka tcha, chunk-ka tcha -- and with fleeing not an option, I have no choice but to turn and fight."

How To Go Blind (in 12 easy steps)
This is one of my favorites from Wally Glenn aka Pyro Boy. I actually met the eye doctor in question, at Wally's big wine and cheese party.

BESO Me Mucho
The Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra is such a great band! We had them for two shows at the Seattle Lindy Exchange on Saturday, playing at the Century Ballroom. Bill writes most of their material. Very funny lyrics! and check out the sound samples.
"We could talk about the smoggy air
The infrastructure left in disrepair
But with the moonlight in your hair
I wanna talk about love."

I guess I'm not the only one that likes this kind of soap (candle, cologne, lotion...).
"Sometimes eyes must be held in a skull,
pressed there by green teatherapy
& the enlightenment of body mist
carried from the Eastern motherland."

TidBITS -- useful for non-Mac folks, too
I've been reading TidBITS for a long time -- I started because I worked with someone who also worked there. It's really useful for news and internet stuff. Macs are the focus, but they cover other areas also. I just like their way of thinking!

Search Hit Parade
I hadn't heard about this! I like it better than other web neilsen-type ratings. What are people actually looking for? Lycos does a bit of editorial filtering which makes this more useful. I especially like the "mystery terms" where lycos doesn't know why folks are searching on a particular word. "Serenity seems to be closely associated with rehab centers, but we can't turn up any traffic connection there."
